Keep up the great work

it’s a great app, best of its kind. but after the last update there is bug that app opening in half-screen mode and there is nothing i can do to change it

Excellent chess game for iPhone, better than all other free apps I have tried; able to use independently of Internet connection. Some other games only work in sideways “landscape” mode (3-D is pretty but not for me) and/or bombard the user with stupid annoying advertisements; Smallfish is very clean and honest. Another app I tried prompted (after the first Book opening) to “Upgrade to Pro to play against the engine”. How dumb is that? Moves are created in PGN format; game may be repositioned to any prior move at any time. Some other chess apps do not show previous moves. Moves may be exported (copied) to clipboard and pasted to Notes app; from there may be imported to any other chess engine. May also be saved to in-app game files library. Play against SmallFish engine with 19 levels of difficulty or 2 player with full engine analysis available. Solve any chess puzzle; use blunder checking feature to learn and improve your game. Reset board to original starting for any game or puzzle while not deleting the moves. Auto-play the game for review. Insert comments in the PGN moves at any point for any move. Analysis graph allows you to touch the graph and reposition the game to where you sank the boat. Big thanks to Ted for recent update to import PGN files without headers. Some improvements/fixes should be considered: 1. There is no Resign or offer to Draw feature to end the game. Also engine should offer to resign if checkmate is imminent; 2 or 3 moves to mate? Engine will Draw if same position repeats 3 times. Take back move to before the draw to consider alternate moves. 2. The game board for Setup position is missing row/column coordinates labels. Default position is White at the bottom. (This was fixed early in 2024, thanks Ted! 3. Blunder checking feature inserts line feed for every move after standard book opening resulting in lengthy text file; suggest (user option?) a line feed only after maybe every 10 full moves to visually be more appealing? 3a. Option to “cleanup” all comments and annotations inserted by Blunder Check? Yes there is! Start Blunder Check and immediately hit “X” to stop; all Blunder Check comments are removed. 4. The ••• dots to access Comments, Auto-Play and Blunder checking features menu could be placed in a different area other than directly nearly over-laying the right side of the PGN moves. 5. Other Cosmetic Visual improvements: 5a. Allow chess board to be sized a bit smaller and have the row/column coordinates labels to be outside the board squares, or a choice between overlapping board or outside of board (?) 5b. Time controls are annoying; can they be turned off completely? Clock does not affect who wins or loses; some other apps rudely end and lock the game when clock expires. 5c. Most playing difficulty levels have duplicate descriptions without the corresponding ELO rating levels indicated in the exported PGN files; not that it is important but would be nice not to have to edit these descriptions so I know what level range I constantly lose to. 6. Some clarification could be provided to further explain the settings for Shorten Analysis, Analysis Time and Threads in the Options for the impact on battery drain and engine strength. I have experimented with most of the free apps available and Smallfish is by far the best. Free, no ads, no crashes, import/export any PGN file. In summary this is a top notch awesome game.

“SmallFish” is simply the best mobile chess app I have ever used. There are too many great features to list here! I am a beginner player, and your app has already helped me greatly improve my play. Superb app in every way!

Maybe this is a good app, people seem to like it. However, its functionality is completely obscured by a hideous, unintuitive interface. Spend your $4.99 on a milkshake.

It does what I need. I needed a tool to setup chess puzzles and to analyze chess positions. Plus I need a method to study chess games. It works for me! Update: For improvement, could you allow analysis to show other possible moves. When I am looking at my mistakes, it was nice to keep the original game and add where I could have gone!

Nice app. I saw someone say make there be an option to set the engines depth it thinks to before making a move. That would be good.

I love this app! But I would love to see search depth limiting, like instead of 20+ moves ahead I would like to limit it to just 5 moves ahead. Maybe that would allow it to make more human type moves and it would be easier to learn why its suggested move is the best move. Great app though!

I expected it to be much faster than the Stockfish engine in chess com or lichess since it’s presumably using compiled binaries rather than JavaScript. Unfortunately it’s quite often slower. It appears to recalculate every position tbh. It can be faster to get to a high depth (30+) but it’s inconsistent. Perhaps something to do with how the hash table or threading works with iPhone (13 pro max) memory/cpu management. Also if you try to evaluate a variation while analyzing a past game it overwrites everything in the game. 😠

Could you create a 2 player mode? Basically an option to flip the pieces so they face you if you are on the opposite side, and an option to hide everything and have the board take center, with the pieces taken on the sides?

OMG I bought this game and it blew my mind! Now I play it anywhere I go. There’s a world of chess and fancy AI in 5 dollars. Practically a steal!

Not what I expected to see. The app has no way of analyzing games where two player controls the board, so it is useless to me.

this app is solid so imma give it a 5 stars but can u make a mode where its to the point where it doesn’t look like im cheating? like what i mean if a mode where its not overly overpowered pls

I’ve tried many chess apps and find this to be an excellent way to learn the game and practice moves. Clear graphics and analysis are in this. I just wish it had a way to scan photos of a position and look for best moves.

Stockfish 17 is real strong, tables bases are welcome but opening book is almost worthless as silly opening moves abound. Takes an inordinate amount of time to make opening moves. Analysis function works well and playing strength is easy to adjust. I find myself using HAIRCS chess explorer more often for the reason that your opening book is so damaged. Use them both and like them both however. With a stronger opening book this will be a 5 star chess app.

I have been playing chess for about 2 years and this app has helped me so much playing on chess.com I get 100% accurately this is truly a great app only thing is I always get banned:(
