Witty, charming, heartwarming; a true gem of an adventure game!
After originally experiencing The Inner World on PC many years ago, I was happily surprised to see it on the App Store. If you're a fan of well-crafted stories, I can't recommend this game enough. The land and citizens of Asposia will become dear to you, you'll adore Robert and Laura (and Peck!).
This game has charm, wit, and even poignancy; it tackles some real topics, but in an easygoing way that focuses on the characters' personalities and resilience, keeping the mood upbeat.
This game does have some moon logic- you'll need to combine some items that make no sense in real life- but there's an excellent hint system, don't be afraid to use it! The sequel has an equally wonderful story, and the puzzles are a lot more intuitive. Both the original and the sequel were a smooth play on IOS, apart from the occasional crash, which is no big deal with quick load times and frequent autosaves.

Still fun
I just played The Inner World again, after many years, and it is still creative and truly one off the best in the genre. It is a game that despite conflict, feels warm and hopeful. There are just too many wars and conflict in the real world for me, at least, to seek that out as entertainment. It left me smiling, it's not easy and so I recommend it

Fun but buggy
This is a lovely, challenging adventure for about 6 hrs of play, until a known bug that hasn’t been fixed since 2018 left me stuck in the middle courtyard with no scene change to access Conroy’s Basilyan.
Not appropriate for younger-than-teenagers unless allusions to sex and “bar humor” will go over their heads.

Hilarious and well cast adventure
Tim Schafer and Ron Gilbert set the standard of fun and engaging game plots for me and I think The Inner World creators spun a story I looked forward to knowing what happened next. It’s one of those where your heart goes out to the characters involved.
But importantly for me it is also meditative because there is no clock, no pressure, just good calm music and your brain, trying to hack away at the puzzle in front of you.
Some adventures games have out there have gone the direction of reducing the challenge level to the point you are basically just clicking through dialogue, but I appreciate that the Inner World does make you think and you even get to combine items you find, to solve certain puzzles, which I’ve always loved.
And a nice modern touch that the oldie games did not have is the hint system is there just in case you really get stuck.
So as they say, I recommend without reservation.

Too buggy
The puzzle mystery of the game is well thought out but the program has a so buggy that I finally deleted it out of frustration. Do not buy this game. You try to click on things that are supposed to work and they don’t.

It was going so well
I somehow progressed to baking the key without having the puppet, now I am trapped at the reception. I can’t find any solutions online. This seems like a huge oversight.

Comedically Heartwarming
I loved this game! It’s just the puzzle adventure I needed. The story is unique and immediately interesting. The art style is perfectly suited to the game’s atmosphere so exploration is fun, and the voice acting is a highly entertaining. It seems that inventory bugs and other functionalities mentioned in prior reviews has been fixed, because I’ve never had an issue. The gameplay was actually really smooth. Go ahead and buy the bundle - you’ll want to play the second game!

Still no bug fixes...
I love this game so much. It’s beautiful and everything about it is great but I am giving it two stars because even after two years of it being out it STILL has a bug in the last chapter which makes the rest of the game unplayable. The bug is when conroy arrives with his petrifying gun. His basylian is nowhere in the court yard so you can’t move forward.. this happened to me when I bought the game two years ago and I’d have thought that by now the developers would fix it. They have not, and the inventory is buggy now too! I’ve had the same phone this shouldn’t continue to be a problem.

Basically unplayable
The constant tapping trying to get the game to select what I’m tapping on is so frustrating and it’s making this game unplayable. I purchased the bundle and finished part 2 first because this one was giving me so many problems. I thought it was my screen sensitivity but I went back into the reviews and apparently it’s been going on for a while with A LOT of people and the developers must have just said “fk it”, and aren’t planning on fixing the issues. There are bugs, the game doesn’t save, and you can’t click on items or the hints or anything because when you do click on them, NOTHING HAPPENS. I have a brand new phone so I knows it’s not MY issue, but then again, maybe it’s just an issue with newer phones?? I don’t know. All I do know is that I payed for this bundle and only got one playable game. I’m not happy. Don’t waste your time purchasing the bundle or this one by itself because it still doesn’t work and it’s Aug of 2020. The issues have been going on for 2 years. 👎🏼

Loved this game. At least until...
This game is great! Great voice work, storyline and puzzles. HOWEVER,
There is a serious glitch in chapter 4. I started the chapter without an item that is required to progress. Unfortunately I only had one save point so that leaves me with restarting, something I am not sure I want to do. A disappointing end to an otherwise great game.

Play it, here are some tips for controls
To echo everyone else here: this game is fantastic, in a whole other category from most iOS games. It would easily be a 5-star game if it didn’t have the technical problems; it really is wonderful in almost every way. Now to the only downside: because the game is a bit old, the controls can be very challenging. Here are a few tips for how to have the highest success rate possible for the controls:
- When dragging an item from inventory, wait for the name of the object you’re dragging towards to appear before releasing
- If the character doesn’t comment on your attempt in some way then the drag did not work — try again
- Sometimes you just get a “bad drag.” It’s usually easier to try again than to keep dragging the object around for too long looking for the item name’s pop-up
- Finally: don’t be too ashamed to use the tips. Some scenes seem a bit buggier and harder to explore than others. I still had fun while occasionally using tips to help me along so I didn’t keep trying to drag something that wasn’t going to work anyhow. Somehow this was particularly true for me in the very last scene of the game.
Yeah, the controls are buggy, but you get used to them. If anything, I found the first chapter the most difficult and it got much easier from there. I finished the game despite the tough controls and it was very much worth it. :)

Good game, but it has too many bugs
For example, every time a random animation plays it crashes and kicks you out. Another problem with this AND 2 is that I had to stop playing because the game glitches and didn’t give me something important.

I’m Stuck by Game Glitches
I played this game when it first came out and it was very fun! The animation is satisfying and the characters are lovable, but I ran into a glitch and had to email the developer to fix it. I’m playing it again many years later and it’s glitched again and I can’t move forward in the gameplay. I would suggest it, but you might not be able to finish.

Not having a good time with this game
This game was recommended by a friend but now I’m sorry I took the advice. I should have listened to the bad reviews. Controls are unresponsive and awkward. For instance, I try to combine two inventory items 6 or 7 or more times and nothing happens. I look in the hints and it says to do exactly what I’m trying to do. I do it 2 or 3 or 4 more times until it finally works. And that’s just one of the ways in which gameplay is clunky and tedious. In addition, the game is quite slow moving when I click on an item - I click, there’s a pause, then some dialog, I click on something else, there’s a pause, then some dialog, etc etc. Get the picture? Tedious and slow and frustrating. This isn’t fun. It’s basically unplayable. Way too glitchy. For the first time ever, I want a refund.

Great story but extremely frustrating inventory
I thought there was an issue with the screen sensitivity on my phone but realized the issue is the game. The storyline is great and I really enjoy the challenge of the puzzles, but I greatly dislike how difficult it is to use the inventory. I’ve considered quitting the game due to this frustration but I paid money for it so I’ve decided to continue. When using the inventory I notice it takes A LOT of effort to select an item to use it properly. Another annoyance is that it easily activates my iPhone settings screen. Extremely frustrating but great game otherwise.

Loved it!
This was clearly a labor of love. These developers put a vast amount of time, professionalism and work into this game. The puzzles require some out-of-the-box thinking. But they still make sense as you play along. Gorgeous world-building, character development and voice acting. Perfect game for those of us who appreciate thinking and creative challenges in their point-and-click adventure games.
Note to devs: The inventory set-up on this game was much better than the sequel. The sequel hid the inventory under an extra button push that got tedious trying out different items. Obviously not a big complaint but if the devs make another sequel, perhaps they might consider using this style inventory instead.
