Gameplay idea is simple but augmented with the progression and randomization of the roguelike genre. It works really well and feels very satisfying to successfully clear a board or pull off a narrow escape from a tight place. When it “works”. This game will flip-flop about behaviors that it allows. Being diagonal from a pawn is nothing. Being diagonal from a pawn while you have one directly in front of you? It’s safer to just disengage since firing at the active threat, even while being careful to aim your blast so that it clear the pawn in front of you, has a fifty-fifty chance of still having some of the pellets hitting the pawn in front of you, allowing the threatening pawn to kill you immediately. There are shields that protect you from inputting bad moves that will kill you. If you’re in the path of a rook, and shoot a non-threatening knight, it will consume a shield and flash a little heads up about the bad move, encouraging you to instead get out of the path of the rook. If you instead shoot the rook, even if the shot would kill the rook and eliminate the threat in the first place, it will still flash that warning, leading you to believe half the time that certain perfectly fine game actions are bad. It does not do this for the (enemy) king however, if you can land a death blow on the king, it won’t prevent you from doing so, even while in mortal peril, because the game ends immediately upon killing the king. You cannot hop on and claim pieces like in actual chess. That feels like a shortcoming. However, there is something called “blade” that is entirely unexplained. Having blade 3 will allow you to melee units adjacent to you with 3 or fewer hit points. Same for every other level of blade. Blade however, does not move you into that piece’s space like you might think, if you have the idea of claiming pieces like in normal chess in your head. Also be careful not to become too powerful! If a stray bit of buckshot hits the wrong unit and kills it, the queen/bishop/rook behind it that wasn’t a threat previously will instantly kill you. I guess like in chess. I just wonder why the shields wouldn’t pop up a warning for this particular circumstance. It does if you have the sawed-off shotgun upgrade and the blast back would kick you into a threat space. Basically, it’s really good, and you’re going to really enjoy it, and you’re going to do run, after run, after run, until at some point the amount of inconsistencies and small irritations pile up and you’re more annoyed than when you picked up the game for that session.

It deserves every penny

I bought this game not expecting much but excited because of the trailer-and boy am I glad! It is so addictive, and time killing. Whenever I’m on a road trip I bust out this game to ply until I get there. If you need something fun and time killing. This is THE game to play! Thank you devs for this game and my time!

I'm writing this because I found the game too difficult, so I'm leaving this review because I found the game too difficult for me. But again, if you don't mind the difficulty but this game. I know this review won't apply to everyone, but this is just my opinion, it's too difficult for me.

So I love the game and the concept but the thing I hate is how many times I get trapped. It’s probably just a skill issue though.

Love the game. Super addictive and fun. A few issues that prevent a five star review: 1) incoming calls turn off volume of the game 2) impossible to swipe game away to get to Home Screen while playing 3) noticed certain cards like Shovel do not appear in the Codex which is frustrating for completionists who want the Attila gun. Unless they are hidden and secret? Not sure. I own the game on Switch as well and have noticed the same issue as well. Is this because each platform has a different version. Please fix this issues as the game is fantastic!

The only problem was the progress saving bug and now it’s patched

The game is great now, since I can go to sleep without worrying about my progress. Just one more issue, whenever I get patience or bold plan, I can’t actually pick from the entire deck. It shows a lot of cards, but never all of them, and it ruins a lot of runs that I have. Otherwise 11/10 game, hope you devs have a wonderful day!

It just feels bad. No warning. No lives. Nothing. Just 15min wasted. And then another 6 hours wasted progressing and it didn’t save. Fantastic.

I reinstalled and now works fine. 5 stars I like the game a lot and it’s easy to play and easy to pick up and learn and try new strategies. However, there does seem to be some glitching with the music and also it’s hard to get out of the app without accidentally moving your character. Furthermore, the game resets constantly, and I have to do the tutorial over and over again.

I recently got the game, and have been experiencing a pretty big bug. Whenever I close the app all the way, it resets all the progress I have made. All shotguns other shotguns are locked, and all achievements are wiped. I really do enjoy the gameplay, but it is really discouraging know one wrong swipe and all my progress is gone. If this is fixed, I will up the review to 5 stars. Problem was fixed:)

every time i close the app i lose all progress. no unlocks or achievements are saved. i have to skip the tutorial every time. bummer because its a great game

I love rogue likes and this game seems right up my alley and it was very fun. But it has a major issue where it completely resets any time I close and reopen the game. I’ve beaten the throne game mode and unlocked some of the codex, but it doesn’t matter as everything resets the next time I open the game, back to doing the tutorial again… I really would like to continue playing the game and unlock all the cards and shotguns, but until this major issue is fixed, I cannot.

An incredible game with great gameplay. I love chess and this story is epic. But my progress gets deleted when I close the game, achievements and everything! Help!

Not worth paying for this game if you can’t save your progress at all and have to start with the tutorial everytime the game restarts. I would give this 5 stars if only the save feature is working.

I love this the game I recently found it and have beating throne I don’t know how many times by now but every time I open the app back up it starts from the tutorial again and makes me start all over again locks the other modes again like I haven’t played the game yet. I really want to keep playing but because this keeps happening I urge people to wait till this is fixed

Every time I open the game nothing has been saved. I have to do the tutorial all over again and can’t use the modes or guns I unlocked. Game Center achievements are tracked but nothing else.

Great game and great mechanics. But I’m taking two stars off because it doesn’t save your progress. I hurt my leg so I played all day when I was couch bound, and when I fired up the game this morning all my progress (multiple unlocked shotguns, new game modes, etc.) were all gone and I had to restart from the tutorial.

I have had a lot of fun with the game, however every time I close my game no progress is saved meaning all of my shotguns and unlocks vanish every time I go to play and makes the game honestly unplayable

Trust me on this, guys! The money is worth it! Thanks for such an awesome game! My only complaint is that the story is too short, with only one boss. Please please PLEASE add more bosses! Other than that, 10/10 game
